Looking at your entire dashboard…

…is a bad habit to get into because then you’ll miss a few days and get 40 pages in and still not be caught up and miss a few more days and lose all hope of catching up. However, you may still stumble across your most feminist friend reblogging something worthwhile, and the most fantastic, wonderful thing that is Ze Frank’s new show, and then remember you can check James, and Stephane, and Almendra, and the Vlogbrothers, and Neil Gaiman, and the girl who draws cat comics, and the girl who draws hunger games and avengers comics, and philolzophy and and and then you realize why it is that you don’t want to miss posts, everyone you follow is effing awesome.

But still, calm down, check some favorites, and feel happy that there are too many great and beautiful and thoughtful things in the world for you to be able to observe them all.

Plus, you encountered a squirrel that lives in a nest in a tree practically in your front yard today, and it’s unlikely you could’ve found that on the internet.

remember me?

authorsarahdessen:

I have been SO off of blogging I wasn’t even sure how to begin this entry. Which is CRAZY, considering how often I used to do it. What, you may ask, HAVE you been doing with all your time? Well, there’s been this little matter of raising my kid. Also a first draft of the next book to try and finish. Plus: husband’s business things, brawling with NC Dept of Revenue (don’t ask, will just say do NOT recommend it) coddling my chickens, helping my parents get ready to move for the first time in over thirty years. Also, a lot of Real Housewives to watch.

Somehow, however, I have managed to join Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/dessensarah) AND resurrect this Tumblr. So clearly I am still into social networking/procrastination, if not blogging. Look no further than my Twitter (@sarahdessen) which I am on constantly. I’m thinking I may cross post from now on here AND Tumblr, with shorter entries. If I can pull myself away from my chickens and the Housewives.

I am also reading: I swear! Although this week I faced that dilemma of having started a REALLY well reviewed, Literary, Important Book that I just…couldn’t get into. It was nonfiction, a bestseller, with a serious but crucial subject. The kind of book you feel like a moron if you don’t like, because you MUST be shallow. (That’s my internal voice talking: it’s nice, right? Yeah, I don’t really think so either.) Anyway, thanks to support of my Twitter folks, I decided to set it aside anyway, even if it was a failing on my part. It was not the book, it was me. But as my mom is fond of saying, “Life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy.”

And you know what? I am SO GLAD I did, because I finally had a chance to pick up John Green’s latest, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. Disclaimer: I bought this book back on the day it was published (no joke) but I don’t read YA that much, and not at ALL when I am working on a draft of my own. Too distracting. However, I was finally at a place where I could dive in and I am LOVING it so much. (Please, no spoilers! Please?) I really don’t want to work on my own book at ALL since it is so good (which is kind of unfortunate, as I really do need to knuckle down right now). Seriously, though, I’d been trudging through this serious book, berating myself for not being more into it. Then I picked up TFIOS, read one page, and was sucked under. Night and Day, people. Related: YA rocks. Yeah, I said it.

Sarah Dessen has tumblr now! And thinks TFIOS rocks! (This is just a piece of the post, go to Dessen’s blog for the rest!)

I am not sure

whether I want to go through my likes and unlike things I don’t care about/want to remember any more, in order to make the likes I have saved easier to find, and of a higher caliber of meaningfulness, or if I want to leave them as they are, a snapshot of things I felt mattered in passing.

Tumblr, I know we are all tumbly and everything, and cats and Paula Deen Riding Things and Ryan Gosling Reading YA, and that’s all great. It’s perfect, really. I wouldn’t want to change it.

But can we just take a moment right now to be grateful and astonished that we are alive and able to bear witness to the universe? Can we just spend like four seconds letting it sink in that we are here, together, amid something much larger than we can effectively imagine?

How strange it is to be anything at all.

Why, hello there…

A note on followers

I try to refrain from telling people to follow my blog, because I don’t want to badger my friends or focus on that sort of thing on my blog. I’d rather talk about art and philosophy and the goodness of things.

It still makes me happy to get new followers.

However, it makes me even happier to hear about friends or classmates who read my blog without even my knowing, whether it’s for prof quotes, or to check up on my life or whether they like the articles or poetry I sometimes I post. I think this is because it reminds me of a network of people who care about me and/or value the ideas and thoughts and images I put out here. It just gives me the warm and fuzzies 🙂

I must admit though, what pleases me the most is when someone whose blog I read and opinion I respect follows my blog. That can light up my whole day, because, as much as I love sharing things with the people I already know and care about, I also love creating content that speaks to people who haven’t met me, and the possibility for new friendships that creates.

So thank you.
