Calling women sluts\/whores\/skanks is a form of sexism.<br \/><\/strong>When it comes to costumes, clothing, and sexual behavior, women are judged by a very different rubric than men. \u00a0When a guy has a lot of sex, he\u2019s a stud. \u00a0If a woman behaves the same way, she\u2019s a \u201cwhore\u201d, \u201cdirty\u201d, \u201cused up\u201d, and doesn\u2019t deserve to be treated with respect. \u00a0While people may use terms like \u201cmanslut\u201d or \u201cmanwhore\u201d, the consequences for the \u201cmanwhore\u201d are not nearly as extreme. \u00a0People don\u2019t see him as unworthy of respect. \u00a0He won\u2019t be degraded, bullied, or have lies and rumors spread about him. \u00a0His reputation won\u2019t be destroyed. \u00a0Being a \u201cmanwhore\u201d is dismissed as him *~just being a guy~*. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span>Because slut shame is a result of sexist ideas about what a woman \u201cshould\u201d be or is <em>allowed<\/em> to do\/be in the first place, women slut-shaming each other is a form of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><em>internalized sexism. \u00a0<\/em>This is\u00a0<span>where a woman believes sexist things about herself and other women. \u00a0It can be very disruptive and harmful to women\u2019s relationships with each other. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span><\/span><span>These are some of the ways slut shame is entrenched in sexism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>2. Slut shame limits women\u2019s freedom.<br \/><\/strong><span>Calling women names and degrading them when they *break the rules* about how a woman is SUPPOSED to dress or behave ensures that women don\u2019t have the same freedom men do. \u00a0They are not allowed to dress or do what they like\u2026unless they want to pay the price of being bullied or dehumanized for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>3. Slut shame is one of the ways women compete with each other for male approval. \u00a0 <br \/><\/strong>Slut-shaming creates a divide between women. \u00a0There are the \u201cslutty stupid ones\u201d with \u201cno self respect\u201d and there are the \u201cproper ladies\u201d who deserve to be treated as human. \u00a0Instead of building women up and cultivating healthy friendships, slut shame turns women against each other so that the slut-shamer can prove she\u2019s \u201cnot like that\u201d and therefore worthy of respect. \u00a0It puts women into harmful categories based on nothing more than how someone dresses or is perceived by others. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>4. Slut shame is a form of bullying.<\/strong><br \/>Girls who break outside the mold of what they are supposed to do\/be sexually and are thusly labeled sluts are at a higher risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide. \u00a0There have been many suicides that started with bullying in the form of slut shame. <em>RIP\u00a0Felicia Garcia, Amanda Todd, Phoebe Prince, Hope Witsell, Stacey Rambold\u2019s unnamed victim, and all the other young women who have tragically taken their own lives because of the heartlessness and sexism of their peers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>5. Slut shame leads to rape, sexual assault, and sexual violence.<br \/><\/strong>Because people see \u201csluts\u201d as unworthy of respect, she is therefore not entitled to say no. \u00a0In this mentality, \u201csluts\u201d become a target of harassment, assault, and even rape. \u00a0After the violence, she is then blamed for it. \u00a0After all, <a href=\"http:\/\/publicshaming.tumblr.com\/post\/45608534736\/the-news-out-of-steubenville-today-is-a-small\" target=\"_blank\">she was just a dumb slut<\/a>\u2026.she asked for it, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>This Halloween (and always) be a good person. \u00a0Respect women, respect their choices, and check yourself when you find yourself thinking or saying someone is a slut. \u00a0It\u2019s a deeply held attitude about women that we all learn from our sexist culture, and it is vital that we all take the time to unlearn it. \u00a0These attitudes are more vicious and dangerous than they might appear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">xx<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Laci<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>PSA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>lacigreen: **5 THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SLUT SHAME THIS HALLOWEEN** 1.
