So she gets out. And that is played as the right thing to do. She isn\u2019t punished for it or made to feel bad about \u2018abandoning her family\u2019. There isn\u2019t an underlying \u2018but they\u2019re your family and you have to love them\u2019 or \u2018they\u2019re your family and they love you even if they don\u2019t show it well or do hurtful things\u2019 message of the kind that I see OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER in media. <strong><em>Matilda gets out and lives happily ever after because of it.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We need a million more movies like this to counter the metric shit ton of movies that directly counter this message.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/sometimes-the-family-you-start-with-isn%27t-a-good-one\" target=\"_blank\">#sometimes the family you start with isn\u2019t a good one<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/but-you-can-find-your-own\" target=\"_blank\">#but you can find your own<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/family-is-not-absolute\" target=\"_blank\">#family is not absolute<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/blood-is-not-absolute\" target=\"_blank\">#blood is not absolute<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>glamaphonic: moniquill: No guys, I need to stop and talk about something in this movie and how fucking revolutionary it was; something that I haven\u2019t seen in a movie before or since.
