What people fail to realize is that these people, these mainstream ‘artists’ are signed to contracts that basically make them into puppets of fame. Why do you think there’s such a similar pattern in all mainstream songs or artists? Sex, going clubbing, money… colorful and dramatic music videos/clothing. It’s what sells, and of course that’s the main goal of these music businesses. Being an artist is merely being yourself because we’re all naturally unique. That’s why I feel it is so illusory for people to believe that these mainstream people are artists because they act upon what the masses want from them, rather than personally self-expressing themselves, resulting in a mass population of people who do the same thing and feel ashamed if they don’t fit up to those kinds of standards.

Some great points. I think there are some mainstream artists which are truly unique, but I think this touches on the point why I’m uninterested in a lot of mainstream music.

For centuries, ever since the discovery of the option to shave off unwanted facial hair, the moustache has been a symbol of dignity and prestige. Bearers of this magnificent form of facial hair are typically regal or highly intelligent (see Einstein). Interestingly, the owners of upper-lip tresses also often speak with accents. Scientists explain this phenomenon by the theory that the growing hair follicles upon the top lip have deep roots which spread back into the voice box, adding peculiar intonations on people’s voices.

Historically, the female’s inability to grow a moustache has caused horrendous gender inequality. Lack of voting privileges and equal opportunities in the job world for women can easily be traced back to the fact that they cannot produce moustaches as full and as majestic as males can. Small attempts to grow facial hair in women are typically regarded as unattractive because males view them as a threat to their power. The power of wielding a glorious ‘stache, that is.

The most women can do these days is take strands of their worthless head hair and pretend, for a fleeting moment, to share in the triumphant honour and privilege it is to have a moustache.

There is this gap inbetween who I always thought I would be and who I am now. That gap is terrifying at times… but unjustly so. You can’t expect the way you always imagine life to go to be even a vague shadow of what actually happens. They are two nearly entirely different entities, and that’s not bad thing. So, it’s not fair to beat yourself up for dissonance between these two categories. I, for one, am not where I thought I would be – but that’s actually okay. Things have happened within me that I could not have predicted and, while some of them are not ideal, some of them are fantastic. The thing is, you can guess and you can estimate what your future is going to look like, but you shouldn’t be disappointed when things turn out differently. Events you could never adumbrate will take place, you will meet people you never thought you would know and slowly, ever so slowly, you will become the person you were always supposed to be, whether you had anticipated it or not.

This is wise. There are many beautiful surprises formed out of broken plans as soon as one learns to let go of the ache of fallen expectations.

Isn’t it also that on some fundamental level we find it difficult to understand that other people are human beings in the same way that we are? We idealize them as gods or dismiss them as animals.
