MCM 11: Dear Lemon Lima

I watched this movie with my mom and we both couldn’t help but notice it had a lot of similarities to Moonrise Kingdom (which I found dark enough to be upsetting, although I could see the merit of it) in aspects such as pacing, colour, music and even themes. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first but I was surprised to find I actually quite liked it.

I think my enjoyment was largely due to the portrayal of Philip. When I was about 12 I’m pretty sure I viewed boys almost exactly the way Philip actually was: like they would treat me differently (better) when it was just me then when we were in groups (where I was often ignored). Or in other words, they were often willing to treat me poorly on behalf of their image. And I definitely had lots of experiences with boys that support this belief (I don’t think I even really shook this feeling until university). Maybe that’s the reason I enjoyed watching Vanessa realize Phillip wasn’t worth her time.

You go girl.

MCM 9: Parental Guidance

This was just a funny family movie I watched with my mom when she was sick. However, it turned out to be much better than either of us expected. The balance of zany family, progressive parenting methods, technology illiteracy, genuinely funny jokes and heartwarming bonding moments was just right.

So I recommend this one for something genuinely light and funny, to watch with your family or by yourself, regardless of age.

Let me tell you a fucking thing about costume design. That’s some in depth, difficult shit to learn. And the fact that this goddess can ramble this shit off the cuff means she knows her shit. ELLE WOODS IS A GODAMNED GENIUS AND IT’s NOT A STRETCH TO BELIEVE SHE GOT INTO HARVARD LAW MMMK?

FUCK YEAH ELLE WOODS OR DIE

this movie is literally about an attractive woman who loves to party having to prove over and over again that she’s also intelligent and hard-working to those who judge her based on her looks (who also empowers and fights for other women, and fosters unlikely friendships instead of engaging in girl hate) and if you don’t think that’s some great feminist shit then I don’t know what your problem is

Let’s not forget that in the end when the guy wants her again, she turns him down because she knows she deserves better.

I just watched this movie again a few weeks ago and was reminded of its fabulosity.

Books and Movies

They are making How I Live Now into a movie and I don’t know how I feel about that except a little choked up. I loved that book so much, I hope they do it justice. This on top of Ender’s Game and The Fault in Our Stars. Plus Catching Fire. I just have a lot of feelings. I don’t want to have my personal worlds ruined by poor adaptions. There’s just something special about books.

Response: “I Hate Strong Female Characters”

rachelkiley:

A post came out in the NewStatesmen today by Sophia McDougall called “I Hate Strong Female Characters.” A lot of you may have already seen it. It’s been shared by lots of people I know, I’ve seen links from several sources show up on my dash, and I RTed it myself earlier today.

I highly recommend you read it for yourself, but the gist of it is that Hollywood has taken the call for “more strong female characters” to mean that we literally want strong female characters. That THAT is the way to combat the stereotypical female characters that have always existed in Hollywood movies (i.e. damsel in distress, sexy eye candy, etc.) and provide appropriate representation for women in films and television (though this is much more a problem you see in movies than TV). Moreover, that the public also often misinterprets the idea of wanting “strong female characters” to mean this, and that male characters (protagonists in particular) are not held to this same intensely literal meaning when categorized as strong male characters. Male protagonists are allowed be a number of different, varying things, and strong in ways that may not always include or highlight physical (or mental or emotional) strength. And the post also brings up perhaps the worst offense of all, that female characters categorized as SFCs are often shown displaying excessive amounts of strength or physical aggression towards men in ways that would cause us as an audience to recoil if the roles were reversed and it was a man acting that way to a woman — the reason being that the audience assumes (or the people behind the film assume the audience assumes) the female character is “weak” until it is unequivocally proven otherwise, something the male characters don’t have to prove.

The article really covers everything, and I agree with it so very much, but this is something I’ve been thinking about incessantly for the past year or two, both in my writing and in watching things, so I’m gonna talk about it because it’s my tumblr and I want to.

Excellent response to the ‘Strong Female Characters’ article I linked to a while past

No guys, I need to stop and talk about something in this movie and how fucking revolutionary it was; something that I haven’t seen in a movie before or since.

This is a movie about a kid who leaves her birth family.

Not a kid who find that they have a secret lineage or something that allows them to find their ‘true family’ – this is a movie about a kid whose true birth family is made up of bad people. So she gets out. And that is played as the right thing to do. She isn’t punished for it or made to feel bad about ‘abandoning her family’. There isn’t an underlying ‘but they’re your family and you have to love them’ or ‘they’re your family and they love you even if they don’t show it well or do hurtful things’ message of the kind that I see OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER in media. Matilda gets out and lives happily ever after because of it.

We need a million more movies like this to counter the metric shit ton of movies that directly counter this message.

Clueless Drinking Game

mouzeron:

– Cher says “as if”
-Dionne wears a weird hat
-Cher says “dadddyy”
-Cher has a hissy fit
-Elton flirts with Cher
-Cher is “clueless”
-Ty flirts with Elton
-Elton is a jerk
-Christian is obviously gay
-high socks
-Cher is a terrible driver
-someone has a nose job
-Amber is a dick
-Ty is dumb

This sounds like a fantastic way to torture Adam 😀

I mean, watching the dictator would probably be a fair trade.

Clueless <3

movie viewing wish list

perpetualthoughts:

Whip it – because I’m an Ellen Page fan and I like girls who break societal rules

Adam – because it looks charming and nerdy

(500) Days of Summer – because I like stories where the guy is romantic and charming and  the girl is hard to catch (plus there’s something enchanting about Zooey Deschanel’s voice)

Post Grad – because I’ve been thinking about whether I want to go to graduate school and what kind of jobs I’ll be able to get after four years of university

Tonight I checked Fame of the list. Well the plot was a little thin, I really enjoyed it. The performances in it were beautiful, and the whole story was like snapshots of growth and discovery, setbacks and art. There is such talent in this world.

I wrote this in grade 12, and just came across it. The only movie I’ve actually watched is Whip It (fantastic) but I was considering watching (500) Days of Summer again, because I love New Girl.

Anyways, the funny part:

Adam – because it looks charming and nerdy

Adam – because it looks he is charming and nerdy
