How did I not know this super useful word?
Milieu. a person’s social environment
Calligraphy practice part two
No one is a slut. “Slut” is a made-up word to keep women from having as much fun as men. A person who enjoys sex is just a person and a person who is a virgin is also just a person and everyone should lay off each other’s sex lives. Retire the word “slut” please.
Life is too fascinating, too mesmerizing, too complicated, too beautiful, too poignant, too short, too intricate & too wonderful to ever let yourself be bored.
It always shocked me when I realized that I wasn’t the only person in the world who thought and felt such strange and awful things.
Words That Don’t Exist in the English Language
L’esprit de escalier: (French) The feeling you get after leaving a conversation, when you think of all the things you should have said. Translated it means “the spirit of the staircase.”
Waldeinsamkeit: (German) The feeling of being alone in the woods.
Meraki: (Greek) Doing something with soul, creativity, or love.
Forelsket: (Norwegian) The euphoria you experience when you are first falling in love.
Gheegle: (Filipino) The urge to pinch or squeeze something that is unbearably cute.
Pochemuchka: (Russian) A person who asks a lot of questions.
Pena ajena: (Mexican Spanish) The embarrassment you feel watching someone else’s humiliation.
Cualacino: (Italian) The mark left on a table by a cold glass.
Ilunga: (Tshiluba, Congo) A person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time.
I love the idea of other languages, I just don’t seem to have the skill or perseverance to actually learn any properly.
As a rule, cliche as this sounds, I try to live with no regrets. Take what you can from any experience, right? But I do go over conversations in my head and innerly groan – aka ‘L’esprit de escalier’ would be a useful one for me! (at least I have an inkling about French)
