“In the Sitio Maligaya region of the Phillipines, the homes are often covered with fluted or corrugated sheet metal for roofs. Which means, their homes are pretty dark. While many have electricity, many do not, and those that do don’t want to use it to power light bulbs to light their homes.

So, the clever “Solar Demi” created a way to bring light into their homes with something that’s essential free: empty plastic drink bottles. The results are amazing, and cost very little to build, and nothing to maintain.”

During Earth Week my school’s Interact club did several projects, including “a million acts of kindness” competition, a walk/bike/bus/carpool to school day (with prizes!), and a earth day open mic performance at lunch. Another project we dud was the” Dress Matilda” recycling booth. One of our brainstormed ideas was to dress up in garbage bags, or have some sort of fashion/art show with garbage. However, we meet in the drama room, and there is this old mannequin in there. While using garbage bags to make clothing wasn’t particularly earth-friendly, dressing up a mannequin in trash could be. The mannequin, Matilda, was going to be accompanied by a display on recycling, but due to unforeseen circumstances, that recycling display didn’t make it to school.  Matilda was quite popular anyways, she got a fresh paint of green paint, a blue bikini and a lot of attention. I think the message, think about where your trash is going and what it’s doing, is a good one, that stands by itself, without the standard recycling propaganda.
